The perfect Valentines getaway
Theatrical, sensual, elegant – I know where I’m going to be hinting my boyfriend take me this Valentine’s Day.
The Venice Carnival takes place every year in the ten days before Shrove Tuesday, and was first held in the 11th Century. The fantastic and colourful costumes and masks, including the Commedie del’Arte. Harlequins, and the courtesans, have become synonymous with the history of Venice, adding extra romance to the already enchanting lovers’ destination. Beginning, as it did in the 18th Century, with a series of balls in Piazza San Marco, the modern Venice Carnival also consists of a parade around the city, live music, face-painting, and ‘frittelle’, a special doughnut made only at Carnival time.
In between all the revelry, how relaxing it would be to take a leisurely ride in a gondola, maybe beneath the Bridge of Sighs, followed, perhaps, with dragging the other half in and out of the shops and boutiques on Rialto Bridge. The Byzantine and Arab influenced architecture, not to mention the plush Rococo interiors, are becoming as well known for their decaying elegance as the luxurious lifestyles sought there by millions.
This mythical destination makes it perfect for a romantic getaway, whether you’re popping the question, or simply escaping the stresses of home for a few days – and the Venice Festival will be sure to make your visit even more magical. Poised can offer hospitality packages on request, helping you take care of every little detail, like red rose petals strewn across the bed of your luxury suite… (hint!).
